It was interested in this page because I own the "Cakewalk Pro" sequencing program already. I wanted to know what more I could learn about how to get the most out of it. This is an unofficial user-owned page, and as such, it is rather limited. Still, if you were interested in buying "Cakewalk," you would probably want to check this page out.
- Go to the Cubase site to get a free demo ! Cubase has proven itself to be among the top sequencer/hard disk recording programs available, and has led the market in some areas for years (this product has innovated the entire sequencer market). Cubase, the standard edition, has all of the sequencing and hard disk recording features of the Score version, but lacks some of the advanced scoring (along with a couple of other minor features). Crescendo MIDI Plugin - This I also discovered while working on a class assignment. It apparently is a plugin program (designed for use with JAVA) that you can install on your PC (sorry, no Mac version available yet), and--with the right sound card or MIDI sequencer/sound module installed--it will "allow you to add music to your Web pages or listen to music while surfing the Web!" I recently installed it on my computer, and the results are fun. It allows "streaming"&151that is, it plays in the background even while you are still loading the file. Definitely cool.

Yamp sound utility - If you're downloading sound files off the Web, you're going to need a good sound player utility to hear them. Yamp fits the bill well. This free program from Germany plays virtually every format out there, including WAV files (all formats, also compressed ones), MIDs, RMIs, MODs, S3Ms, XMs, ITs, AVIs, MPAs, MP1s, MP2s and MP3s, MPEG, and AVI. It offers powerful playlists, Drag and Drop and much more. For Windows. This file is 1,954K in size and should take 10 minutes to download at 28.8 modem speed.
QueuePlay - This small free utility lets you queue up a list of media files from the Windows 95 desktop, then play them back with a single click. It's only 27 kilobytes in size.
Archive Viewer - If you're going to be downloading sound and music files off the Web, then you should check out this handy freeware utility. Archive Viewer is a program that can decompress and view virtually any file type you're likely to stumble across.
MidiPlus player - As long as you're going to be downloading MIDI files, you might as well grab this outstanding free MIDI player. MidiPlus offers loads of features and has a CD-player-like interface, complete with digital timer and no repeat, repeat once, and continuous repeat functions. The program can be minimized on the system tray and can be easily made your default MIDI player. Also supports WAV and AVI files. For Windows.
NetShow: a free audio player - Microsoft's NetShow is an essential, free sound-playing program that handles just about every format you can throw at it (but not WAV files), including .mpg, .AVI and QuickTime files.
Clarion - This is an outstanding free MIDI and audio CD player for Windows. Has a number of cool features, such as CDDB suppport (which will look up CD track titles via the Net). Also lets you open multiple playlists at once and has a built-in file browser, a "sleep" mode, supports Drag `n Drop and much more. Here's a screen shot.
Tornado MIDI utility - With this free program, you can easily make your own MIDI music. Offers an automatic accompaniment provider and recognizes 70 different chords. Uses five drums in same project with eight custom instruments and eight or more distinct sound banks. Also lets you make Karaoke files and export MIDI files and much more. Here's a screen shot. Real layer - An essential client, RealPlayer plays RealAudio and RealVideo content on the Web, all without download delays. You'll need at least a 28.8K speed modem to make the most of this program. Free for individual use.
PureVoice Player/Recorder - This free application offers a player and recorder for voice messages that you can use with your E-mail software. PureVoice offers excellent sound quality and its files are 10 times smaller than WAV files. There's a plug-in specifically for Eudora software, and a separate application for other E-mail products.
